Dennis Pedersen

Dennis Pedersen is a still life photographer who has the ability to create dynamic imagery from all sorts of raw materials. He specialises in cosmetics and beauty however, he does also take photographs of food and drink to promote products too. Pedersen’s work displays both contrasting and complimentary colouring but has a subtlety to it that does not overwhelm a viewer of a photograph.

Within this photograph in particular Pedersen has displayed one clear colour but has used slightly altering tones and shades of the colour to create different levels of darkness and brightness throughout the photograph. This photograph, although simple, shows a clear wide depth of field that allows a viewer to be directed to the centre focal point of the headphones due to the subtlety of the background colour. Pedersen has used a high key set up in order to highlight some areas of shadow to almost outline the product that is being photographed and to create an interpretive view of the photograph that each individual may see differently.

Throughout this image Pedersen has highlighted a clear gradient of tone which starts as very light at the top which begins to become darker as you look down the photograph, which also helps to highlight the focal area of the image as the clearest and best tones of colour are focused towards the centre of the image.

This work has inspired me to create a chain of minimalist shoots with different backgrounds that include one product with a slightly differing colour from the background.
